Tui-Valença cross-border cooperation

Overview

The Eurocidade Tui-Valença region, spanning the border between Spain and Portugal, has engaged in various initiatives to strengthen cross-border ties.

Initial efforts focused on athletic competition, including the 12th Eurocidade Roller Hockey Tournament involving approximately 400 athletes and the 4th edition of the Corrida 2 Léguas Eurocidade Tui-Valença, a 10-kilometer race crossing the Minho River.

Building on these connections, the municipalities launched the ‘Unicidade 2030’ project. This initiative, funded significantly by Interreg VI A Spain-Portugal, aims to advance toward the creation of a European Grouping of Territorial Cooperation (AECT) to grant the Eurocity its own legal personality. The project includes investments in culture, tourism, infrastructure, and social services, such as renovating the Tui Municipal Theater and transforming the former Valença Customs building into a service center.
