Tunisia defense industry development

Overview

Tunisia has initiated a strategic push to establish “industrial defense sovereignty” by reducing its reliance on imported military equipment. Defense Minister Khaled Sehili originally called for the mobilization of national human, material, and technological resources, emphasizing the need for a national strategy driven by public-private partnerships and cooperation between the military, universities, and research centers.

This initiative reached a significant milestone with the inauguration of a military patrol vessel manufactured entirely within the country. Developed and assembled by Tunisian engineers and technicians, the vessel was presented by President Kaïs Saïed at the Bizerte naval base. Saïed noted that despite technical and material obstacles, the project serves as a foundation for the future production of other advanced military equipment.
