Tunisia export market diversification

Overview

Tunisia is pursuing a strategic expansion of its export markets, specifically focusing on olive oil and dates. In Senegal, Tunisia has established itself as the second-largest sub-Saharan African export market, with approximately 140 companies exporting various products to the region.

Broadening its global reach, Tunisia is targeting increased presence in Asia, Africa, and the Americas through public-private collaboration. To facilitate this, the Ministry of Commerce and Export Development and the Banking and Financial Council (CBF) have held sessions to discuss financing mechanisms, risk management, and credit for transformation, packaging, and storage. Financial institutions have also signaled readiness to provide tools to mitigate exchange rate risks and secure international transactions.

Recent performance indicates significant success in the United States, where Tunisia became the top supplier of olive oil during the first eight months of 2026, reportedly surpassing Spain and Italy in volume. Export volumes to the U.S. reached 95,321 tonnes, a 45.4% increase from the previous year.

Sector-specific milestones have also been reached. The date sector saw export revenues exceed one billion dinars following a record national production of 404,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, olive oil export revenues reached 3.77 billion dinars in the first eight months of 2026, representing a 39.5% increase compared to the previous year.
