Tunisia gender parity and economic development
Overview
Tunisia is facing significant challenges regarding gender parity and economic structural disparities. According to the 2026 Global Gender Gap Report, the country ranked 125th out of 145 economies, placing it in the bottom quintile globally. While progress in education and health is projected to reach parity within eight years, substantial gaps persist in political empowerment and economic participation.
These disparities are reflected in the labor market. Data from the second quarter of 2026 shows a national unemployment rate of 14.9%, but the female unemployment rate of 21.6% is nearly double the male rate of 11.8%.
To address competitiveness and sovereignty, the Tunisian industrial sector—which accounts for 17% of GDP—is moving toward Industry 4.0 technologies, including automation and artificial intelligence. Efforts to strengthen supply chains and advanced manufacturing are expected to be highlighted at the Sapri 2026 International Exhibition in November.
