Turkey implements nationwide security for schools and dorms

Overview

Security coordination in Turkey has expanded from regional focus in Kars to a nationwide initiative ahead of the 2026-2027 academic year.

Following high-level coordination meetings between the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, officials established a roadmap for student safety involving governors from all 81 provinces. These national measures include risk-based security planning for university campuses and dormitories, increased narcotics and public order inspections, and enhanced monitoring of school surroundings. Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi has emphasized the need for heightened vigilance to prevent a recurrence of past incidents in regions such as Şanlıurfa and Kahramanmaraş. To support these efforts, specialized training will be provided to private security personnel working in educational institutions.

Local implementations are already underway, such as in Samsun, where authorities have deployed 527 school yard attendants and integrated 91 schools into the City Security Management System (KGYS). Additionally, the Ministry of National Education has addressed the implementation of designated prayer areas within schools. This measure aims to reduce security risks associated with students leaving campus for Friday prayers while simultaneously preventing the loss of instructional time.
