In September 2026, Turkish agricultural directorates in Nevşehir and Bilecik released lists of uncultivated lands for the year. These lists, prepared by Land Identification Commissions under the Law on Soil Protection and Land Use, aim to bring unused land into production through leasing. Landowners were granted a five-day window to file written objections to the lists. Broader efforts to reintegrate unused or occupied lands into production are occurring across other regions. In Edirne, the municipality has reclaimed occupied lands to cultivate sunflowers, wheat, and barley, with harvests used for citizens in need and livestock farmers. In Muğla, authorities are utilizing Law No. 5403 to target uncultivated lands resulting from inheritance or tourism. Under this system, Land Identification Commissions have mapped areas to allow owners to lease land seasonally to farmers through state-guaranteed processes. Expanding on these efforts, the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is implementing a formal process to lease lands that have remained uncultivated for two consecutive years. This initiative is intended to strengthen food supply security and maximize production potential. Under the Law on Soil Protection and Land Use, identified lands will be leased seasonally, with rental payments directed to the original landowners. The identification process for the 2026 production year is complete, and the announcement process began on September 1. Following local administrative approvals, Provincial Directorates of Agriculture and Forestry will manage the leasing process based on requests. Rental prices will be set by commissions and must not be lower than the market value, which is determined using at least three comparable local land examples. By October 2026, the regulation was officially published in the Official Gazette. In Çankırı, the program has already seen results: the Provincial Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry identified 128 parcels totaling 427.47 decares.
