Turkey ATM cash denomination changes

Overview

In late July 2026 Turkish banks began altering the cash mix in ATMs to cope with high inflation and cash‑flow pressures. On July 20 they limited ATM stock to 200‑lira notes, removing smaller denominations such as 100‑lira bills. Guidance warned users about errors that could cause machines to retain cash and described new security sensors.

Three days later, on July 23, the configuration was adjusted again: ATMs were loaded primarily with 100‑ and 200‑lira notes, and 10, 20 and 50‑lira notes were removed. Withdrawals below the smallest available note were rejected, forcing customers to request amounts that are multiples of the lowest denomination. Banks cited limited cassette capacity, rising demand for high‑value cash, operating‑cost reductions and a push toward card and mobile‑payment use.

By early August, analysts noted that the exclusive use of 200‑lira notes was creating cash‑shortage concerns, especially as inflation drove higher demand for cash. Former Ziraat Bankası deputy general manager Şenol Babuşçu highlighted operational challenges and called for larger denominations such as 500‑ and 1,000‑lira notes. At the same time, experts warned that many Turkish citizens keep unused bank accounts and cards, which can become fraud targets and incur fees, urging regular review and closure of unnecessary accounts.
