Turkey energy infrastructure and industrial development

Overview

Turkey is strengthening its position within the global energy and industrial landscape through both private sector investment and large-scale state infrastructure projects.

Hitachi Energy has designated Turkey as a “critical hub” within its European industrial structure and global supply chain, citing the country’s industrial capacity and skilled workforce. The company has invested $70 million in a Power Transformers Factory and Service Center in Kocaeli and indicated readiness for further investment depending on market demand.

Simultaneously, the Turkish government is expanding energy infrastructure to capitalize on geopolitical shifts. A major component of this strategy is the planned 2027 inauguration of the Ceyhan Specialized Energy Industrial Zone. Managed by the Eastern Mediterranean Petrochemical Complex (DAPEK), this project includes a $1.7 billion polypropylene unit and facilities for hydrogen and natural gas storage. While these developments aim to provide competitive energy transit routes, they have raised concerns regarding environmental risks to Mediterranean ecosystems and potential conflicts with Turkey’s 2053 net-zero emissions goals.
