Turkey continues significant water infrastructure and wastewater upgrades to address pollution and long-term security. In İzmir, efforts target heavy metal contamination in the İzmir Gulf through a 976 million TL investment in the Çiğli Advanced Biological Wastewater Treatment Plant. In Istanbul, the Istanbul Water and Sewerage Administration (İSKİ) has reported a total investment of 296 billion lira over the last seven years, with 130 billion lira dedicated to drinking water and 166 billion lira to wastewater. Key achievements include reducing water loss and leakage rates from 22% to 18.48%, preventing the loss of roughly 195 million cubic meters of water. To bolster supply, the Melen 3. Pumping Station has been commissioned, adding 133 million cubic meters of water, while the second phase of the Cumhuriyet Drinking Water Treatment Plant is expected to add 360,000 cubic meters of daily capacity. The recently opened 17.11 billion lira Kağıthane-Bahçelievler-Sefaköy drinking water tunnel, a 20-kilometer underground system, now facilitates the delivery of Melen water to the inner and western parts of Istanbul’s European side. Additionally, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) is enhancing coastal resilience through reinforcement works at various locations, including the Eminönü–Unkapanı line—which is 93% complete—and a large-scale coastal corridor in Büyükçekmece and Beylikdüzü slated for 2027. In Ankara, the Metropolitan Municipality is utilizing approximately $500 million in international financing for the 2054 Ankara Master Plan, focusing To strengthen disaster response capabilities, İSKİ has inaugurated six new facilities on increasing the capacity of the Tatlar Wastewater Treatment Plant Istanbul’s European side, including logistics centers, disaster coordination areas, and improving drinking water supplies service buildings in locations such as Bağcılar Mahmutbey, Eyüpsultan, Silivri Parkköy, and Selimpaşa.
