By early October 2026, autumnal weather patterns brought increased precipitation and atmospheric instability across several Iranian provinces. The Iran Meteorological Organization issued widespread warnings for heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and strong winds across 28 provinces, including Ardabil, Azerbaijan, Gilan, Mazandaran, Lorestan, Kerman, and Hormozgan. In West Azerbaijan, officials warned of potential flash floods and rising river levels, advising citizens to avoid camping near riverbanks. By October 4, heavy rainfall and flooding caused significant damage in Golestan, Alborz, Khuzestan, Lorestan, Fars, and Gilan. In Golestan province, nine separate flooding and waterlogging incidents occurred between October 4 and October 11, affecting 33 households. Morteza Salimi, CEO of the Golestan Red Crescent Society, reported that ‘two people have died and one person remains missing’ following these events. Search and rescue operations involving 70 relief personnel, drones, and search dogs are ongoing, with emergency aid being distributed to affected families. In Alborz province, flooding in Karaj swept vehicles through streets, causing property damage. Waterlogging was also reported in Izeh, Khorramabad, and Oz. Authorities have warned that continued heavy rainfall, potentially influenced by El Niño, necessitates urgent municipal action to clear drainage channels to prevent further urban flooding caused by debris and waste. By October 6, yellow level warnings were issued for 20 provinces. In Gilan, intermittent heavy rain and thunderstorms were expected to persist, while North Khorasan faced potential flooding in riverbeds and street waterlogging. Additionally, a significant temperature drop was anticipated for several northern provinces along the Caspian Sea coast. On October 6, meteorological authorities expanded warnings to include Hormozgan and Tehran. In Hormozgan, southeast winds of approximately 40 km/h were expected to create choppy sea conditions, prompting advice for fishermen to avoid sea travel.
