Turkey expands consular, trade and border services

Overview

In late July 2026 the General Director of Consular Services reported that Turkish consulates processed about three million transactions annually, with 1.5 million already recorded in the first half of the year. Daily traffic at the Kapıkule crossing averaged 47,000 travellers, and during the summer “expatriate season” (22 June‑3 August) roughly 2.5 million people and 632 000 vehicles used Turkey’s western border gates, cutting vehicle customs time to about 29 minutes.

The ministry highlighted 68 attacks on Turkish religious sites worldwide and condemned Greece’s closure of eight Turkish‑minority schools in Western Thrace as a breach of international law. Support for the diaspora was reinforced through the “Memleket Yolu” programme in Serbia and a new digital consular platform serving an estimated 7.5 million Turks abroad, featuring an online Emergency Notification Form, multilingual call centre, AI‑driven chatbot and expanded online processing.

A trade‑diplomacy expansion added 235 trade counsellors in 170 offices across 115 countries under the “Distant Countries Strategy,” aiming to diversify export markets. Upgrades at Kapıkule, including biometric passport readers and AI‑based risk analysis, now handle over 47 000 daily travellers, further reducing waiting times. These measures illustrate Turkey’s coordinated effort to strengthen consular assistance, protect diaspora rights, and boost economic outreach.
