Turkish economic and industrial growth
Overview
Turkey continues to demonstrate significant macroeconomic growth and industrial expansion. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan recently announced that the nation has achieved continuous economic growth for twenty-four consecutive quarters, spanning six years. Recent data indicates the economy grew by 3.7% last year, with growth rates of 2.6% and 2.3% recorded in the first and second quarters of 2026, respectively. The economy has reached a current price volume of $1.602 trillion.
National income per capita has seen a substantial rise, increasing from $3,616 in 2002 to approximately $18,103 in 2025, while total exports have reached record levels. This trajectory aligns with long-term projections suggesting Turkey could become the 17th largest economy in the world by 2030.
Industrial infrastructure is being bolstered by significant investment initiatives. Industry and Technology Minister Mehmet Fatih Kacır detailed a 242 billion lira initiative aimed at strengthening infrastructure, including new organized industrial zones, wastewater treatment plants, and vocational schools.
The defense sector remains a primary driver of technological advancement. Officials report that Turkey has achieved a localization rate of over 80% in defense technologies and has established itself as a major global player in the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) market. Minister Kacır noted that defense industry exports have propelled the country to 8th place globally, reaching $4.23 billion as of late 2025, with the goal of maintaining a top 10 global ranking.
Regional data highlights specific growth in the Aegean region, which reached over $29 billion in exports between January and August 2026, driven by fisheries, citrus, and mining. Within this region, Muğla led export growth, surpassing $1 billion during the same period. İzmir remains the dominant contributor, accounting for over 53 percent of the region's total exports.
