Turkish engineering chambers advocate for disaster safety

Overview

Professional engineering chambers in Turkey are calling for increased government action regarding public safety and disaster preparedness.

In late September, the President of the Chamber of Civil Engineers, Abdullah Ekinci, urged authorities to implement the Practitioner Membership Regulation. Ekinci noted that this regulation, intended to link engineering service risks with engineer competence, has been stalled for over two years due to political assessments. He argued that delaying technical processes undermines protection against disasters like earthquakes and floods.

Following this, on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the TMMOB Chamber of Geological Engineers emphasized that natural events become disasters due to unregulated construction and poor planning. Representatives called for permanent risk reduction policies, including the implementation of a Disaster Risk Reduction Law, a Fault Law, and the creation of a dedicated Ministry of Disaster Management.
