Turkish Health Minister's global and domestic health policy
Overview
Turkish Health Minister Kemal Memişoğlu has addressed both international health policy and domestic medical advancement.
Speaking at a United Nations High-Level Meeting during the 81st General Assembly week, Memişoğlu advocated for global health security and collective action in pandemic preparedness. He emphasized that pandemics are a shared responsibility requiring international cooperation. He also criticized medical inequalities, specifically citing the humanitarian crisis in Gaza regarding access to vaccines and essential medicines for women and children, stating that global health security cannot be discussed where people die due to lack of medical access.
In a domestic context, Memişoğlu has called for increased collaboration between academia, industry, and the healthcare sector. At a Bezmialem Vakıf University ceremony, he urged universities to address field-based problems through research and encouraged entrepreneurs to collaborate with the ministry. He emphasized transitioning Turkey from a healthcare service provider to a leader in producing health knowledge and technology, specifically highlighting domestic developments in ventilators, heart-lung machines, diagnostic tools, and vaccine research.
Expanding on these themes at the 5th World Bio Summit in Seoul, South Korea, Memişoğlu emphasized the role of artificial intelligence in accelerating scientific research. He argued that equitable access to such advancements is a “moral necessity,” stating that progress must not be separated from “conscientious responsibility.” He also detailed Turkey’s ‘Producing Health’ model, which involves expanding AI in healthcare to increase infrastructure efficiency.
At the 6th International Emergency Medicine Congress, Memişoğlu praised emergency health workers as the ‘akıncılar’ (vanguard) of the health army. He noted that Turkey’s advanced IT and software infrastructure should be leveraged to deliver AI-driven health applications globally.
