Turkey has marked the 94th anniversary of Turkish Language Day with ceremonies and award presentations. At an event hosted by the Atatürk Culture, Language and History High Institution, Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy presented the ‘Turkish Language Service Awards’ to scientists, artists, and cultural figures. Minister Ersoy described the Turkish language as more than a communication tool, calling it a ‘carrier of thousands of years of history, civilization, and shared values.’ He reiterated the importance of reaching a consensus on a Common Turkic Alphabet within the Organization of Turkic States and cautioned against the ‘uncontrolled use of foreign concepts’ within the digital age. National leaders also issued messages regarding linguistic preservation. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stated that protecting the language is essential for the nation’s history and future, describing it as a vital bridge between the past and the future. He specifically called on the public to protect the language as a vital heritage for future generations, particularly within the context of the ‘Turkey Century’ initiative. MHP Leader Devlet Bahçeli warned that the weakening of the language could impact national identity and social cohesion. Other participants echoed these concerns. Sedat Göncü of the MHP highlighted the responsibility to protect Turkish from the pressures of globalization, while Sevgi Özel, President of the Language Association (Dil Derneği), addressed the politicization of language and the significance of the Language Revolution. BBP Leader Mustafa Destici further emphasized the necessity of maintaining Turkish integrity against foreign influences and shifts in digital language usage.
