Turkish state and municipal performing arts institutions have commenced their 2026-2027 seasons. In Istanbul, the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet (İDOB) is set to open on September 19 with Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Its repertoire includes ‘Romeo and Juliet’, ‘Giselle’, and ‘Afife’, alongside modern dance productions such as ‘Delirium’ and ‘Pinocchio.exe’. The Nutcracker ballet is also slated for an international tour to Teatro Lirico Di Cagliari. In the theatre sector, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality City Theatres has launched its season with a program of eight plays. Scheduled between October 7 and 11, the lineup includes works by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Mikhail Bulgakov, and Molière. Specific productions include ‘Hayalî’nin Hayali’, which explores Turkish and Greek exchange, ‘Yenilmez’, a drama on economic migration, and ‘Yoldan Çıkan Oyun’, an absurd comedy. Additionally, ‘All of Shakespeare’s Plays’ will perform at the Haşim İşcan Cultural Center during the first two weeks of October. Orchestral activities continue to expand. The Ankara Presidential Symphony Orchestra (CSO) celebrated its 200th anniversary with a sold-out opening concert at CSO Ada Ankara featuring soloist Behzod Abduraimov. Ankara will also host a special concert by the City Orchestra on October 12 to mark the 103rd anniversary of its designation as the capital. The Ankara State Opera and Ballet (ADOB) has announced a repertoire including Mozart’s ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ and the opera ‘Hekimoğlu’. The Istanbul State Symphony Orchestra (IDSO) officially launched its season at the Atatürk Cultural Center with conductor Duncan Ward and pianist Jan Lisiecki performing works by Grieg and Prokofiev. Regional institutions, such as the Denizli Metropolitan Municipality City Theater and the Eskişehir Metropolitan Municipality Symphony Orchestra, have also launched their seasons. Municipalities are increasingly dedicating their seasons to literary figures. In Esenler, the season is dedicated to poet and thinker Sezai Karakoç, featuring an opening ceremony with poetry readings by actor Ali Nuri Türkoğlu. In Kahramanmaraş, the Abdurrahim Karakoç Culture and Art Season includes a symposium on the poet’s legacy and his work ‘Mihriban’.
