As the 2026-2027 academic year begins in Turkey, families face economic strain and health preparation challenges. The cost of school essentials continues to climb, with stationery, uniforms, and books contributing to what some parents describe as a ‘living nightmare.’ While previous estimates for a basic student kit were around 2,500 TL, stationery expenses alone may reach 3,500 to 4,000 TL, with comprehensive lists potentially costing up to 9,000 TL. In response to rising costs, the Ministry of Trade has conducted widespread inspections of stationery retailers in provinces such as Istanbul, Trabzon, and İzmir to prevent unfair price hikes. Additionally, new price ceilings for school canteens have been implemented in Istanbul. Safety remains a primary concern; Mahmut Şahin, President of the Consumers Union, advises parents to look for TSE and CE certification marks and ‘BPA free’ labels to avoid toxic substances, while Taha Keresteci of TÜKİD cautions against counterfeit products from discount shops.
