Turkmenistan Akhal-Teke horse preservation efforts
Overview
Turkmenistan has undertaken several initiatives to promote and preserve the Akhal-Teke horse and its cultural heritage.
In mid-September 2026, the country hosted an international conference in Arkadag City titled “Independent, Eternal Neutral Turkmenistan — the land of horse-filled aspirations: a space of peace, friendship, and cooperation.” The event brought together government officials, diplomatic missions, and international organizations to showcase Turkmen history, traditional crafts, and the cultural significance of the Akhal-Teke horse through exhibitions and performances.
Following this, on September 29, 2026, coinciding with the 35th anniversary of national independence, the government inaugurated the Akhal-Teke Equestrian Complex of the President near Ashgabat. This 1,200-seat facility is designed for the scientific breeding and year-round maintenance of the breed, featuring modern veterinary laboratories and specialized agricultural areas for dietary crops. The opening ceremony included the presentation of an Akhal-Teke horse as a gift to a representative from China’s Daqing Huiyou Breeding Co., Ltd.
