Turmeric supplement health and safety scrutiny
Overview
Research into turmeric and its active compound, curcumin, has highlighted its potential as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent capable of lowering markers such as C-reactive protein and tumor necrosis factor-alpha.
However, the use of enhancers like piperine to address curcumin’s low natural bioavailability has led to regulatory scrutiny. Investigations by the Italian Ministry of Health and the Italian National Institute of Health into approximately 20 cases of hepatitis in the Tuscany and Lombardy regions suggested a possible link between turmeric supplements and liver injury in susceptible individuals. While contaminants were ruled out, the connection between enhanced systemic exposure and rare instances of severe liver injury has brought the regulation of concentrated supplements into focus.
