Following a fire last year that killed 17 residents, the Tuzla Retirement Home (Dom penzionera Tuzla) has faced increasing regulatory scrutiny. Initially, the facility announced plans to reduce its capacity to 100 residents because it exceeded permitted limits and failed to meet social welfare requirements. This move caused distress among families, even as the Center for Social Work offered alternative accommodations. By late August, the situation escalated when the Cantonal Inspection Affairs Administration of Tuzla Canton issued a temporary ban on the home’s social protection activities. The Ministry for Labour, Social Policy and Return confirmed the institution currently fails to meet the legal requirements for operation. While the Ministry is working with the City of Tuzla to find a solution, the status of current residents and the condition of the premises remains uncertain. Despite the inspection ban, the facility continues to operate with approximately 100 residents. The remaining population includes many elderly and immobile individuals requiring constant medical and daily support, complicating relocation efforts. Since the fire, about 60 individuals have been relocated to private care homes. As of early September, the facility houses 106 residents, and management has filed an appeal against the inspection’s decision, noting that activities for residents have not ceased. The crisis is compounded by five unresolved deficiencies identified during a work condition audit, including issues regarding usage permits and capacity compliance. To address technical requirements, the procurement of new elevators has been initiated. Once installed and accepted, the facility intends to apply for a supplementary usage permit. Local officials continue to seek an institutional solution to protect both residents and employees. On September 11, 2026, the legal consequences of the fire progressed as the Tuzla Cantonal Prosecutor's Office issued an indictment against seven individuals.
