Type 2 diabetes management guideline updates
Overview
The American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the European Association for the Study of Diabetes (EASD) have issued new clinical consensus guidelines representing a shift in type 2 diabetes management. The updated approach moves beyond a primary focus on glycemic control toward a holistic strategy aimed at protecting vital organs, including the heart, kidneys, and liver, while also addressing weight management and quality of life.
Key recommendations include the early use of SGLT2 inhibitors and GLP-1 therapies to mitigate long-term risks. For patients with high cardiovascular risk or established heart and kidney disease, a combination of these drug classes is advised regardless of HbA1c levels. While Metformin remains significant, it is no longer strictly required as the first-line treatment if targeted organ protection is the priority. A stepwise approach is now reserved for patients with low cardiovascular risk and no existing organ damage.
Medical experts also noted a rising prevalence of dementia among diabetic patients, suggesting that metabolic and inflammatory damage may contribute to neurodegeneration, such as vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
