Typhoon 18 and severe weather in Japan

Overview

Typhoon 18 formed near the Truk Islands and was projected to intensify into a ‘very strong’ typhoon as it moved northwest toward Japan. Early forecasts suggested the storm could approach the Okinawa and Amami regions between August 25 and 27.

Concurrently, Japan experienced widespread atmospheric instability, resulting in ‘guerrilla thunderstorms’ and significant rainfall across several regions, including Aomori, Yamagata, Sendai, and Toyama. Authorities issued warnings for flooding, landslides, and maritime hazards.

By late August, weather conditions remained unsettled. In Ishikawa Prefecture, lightning warnings were issued due to the risk of sudden downpours and strong gusts, while high temperatures required heatstroke precautions. In Okinawa, the influence of Typhoon 18 and surrounding moist air brought heavy rain to the Sakishima Islands and intermittent thunderstorms to the Okinawa main island and Daito Islands, accompanied by high waves and swells.
