Typhoon 31 approach to Ogasawara Islands

Overview

Typhoon 31, also known as Infa, has been tracked moving near the Marshall Islands as a very strong storm with central pressures between 935 and 960 hPa. Initial forecasts suggested the typhoon would reach the vicinity of the Ogasawara Islands around October 31 or November 1, with uncertain projections regarding a potential path toward the Asian continent.

By October 28, the typhoon was moving west near Minamitorishima, maintaining a central pressure of 945 hPa with maximum sustained winds of 50 m/s and gusts reaching 70 m/s. Forecasts indicated the storm might intensify to a “furious” strength near Minamitorishima by October 29. While the typhoon was expected to remain south of Japan, meteorologists warned of potential high waves and strong winds affecting the Pacific coast depending on its trajectory.

On the morning of October 29, the typhoon was located near Minamitorishima with a central pressure of 940 hPa, maximum wind speeds of 45 m/s, and gusts of 65 m/s. The storm is expected to follow a complex trajectory, moving west-northwest to northwest, then north, before turning west again. Projections indicate the typhoon will reach the Mariana Islands by October 30 and the Ogasawara Islands by October 31. By November 3, the center is expected to shift toward the west near 21 degrees 55 minutes North latitude and 136 degrees 40 minutes East longitude. Due to long-term forecast uncertainty, the forecast radius for November 3 is approximately 220 kilometers.
