UABCS meteorological risk management in Baja California Sur

Overview

The Universidad Autónoma de Baja California Sur (UABCS) has implemented new technological and academic initiatives to address meteorological risks in the region.

In early September, the university launched version 3.0 of its MeteoUABCS portal. Developed by the Laboratorio de Investigación en Gestión Integral del Riesgo (LIGIR), the platform features a predictive model for short-duration convective storms, referred to locally as ‘Toritos’. The system utilizes 10 meteorological stations across locations including La Paz and Cabo San Lucas to provide real-time updates and impact warnings up to 10 minutes before rainfall.

Later in the month, UABCS specialists hosted the 4th Permanent Panorama Forum, ‘Hurricane Season: Different Visions of the Storm.’ The forum addressed the social, economic, and environmental impacts of hydrometeorological phenomena. Experts highlighted the region's specific challenges, such as a significant water deficit and some of the lowest average annual precipitation levels in Mexico, aiming to connect scientific research with community preparedness.
