UEFA Women's Champions League league phase progress

Overview

The UEFA Women’s Champions League has entered its second year utilizing the league phase format, featuring 18 teams from 11 different nations. Under this structure, the top four teams qualify directly for the quarter-finals, while those finishing between 5th and 12th enter knockout play-offs in February.

Reigning champions FC Barcelona begin their title defense with a revamped squad led by Aitana Bonmatí. Other significant opening round matchups include Real Madrid against Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal against HB Køge, and Manchester City against Bayern München. In their opening fixture, Manchester City and FC Bayern München played to a 2-2 draw, a match disrupted by red and blue smoke canisters thrown onto the pitch.

On October 1, 2026, Manchester City faced Real Madrid at Joie Stadium. Real Madrid took an early lead in the 29th minute through Linda Caicedo, but Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw equalized in the 51st minute. The match ended in a 1-1 draw following significant controversy in the final minute when referee Silvia Gasperotti disallowed a potential winning goal by Real Madrid’s Silvia Cristóbal. The decision was based on a collision between the official and Manchester City’s Beth Mead during the build-up. Gasperotti blew her whistle for the collision just moments before the shot was taken, meaning the play was officially dead when the ball entered the net.

Real Madrid manager Pau Quesada expressed intense frustration, criticizing the officiating standards for elite European women's football. Manchester City manager Andree Jeglertz noted that despite the club's ongoing financial investigations regarding the men's team, the women's squad maintained a focus on football, describing their preparation as “business as usual.” Following these results, both Manchester City and Real Madrid have recorded two draws after two rounds of competition.
