UFRN campus political protest violence

Overview

A political protest at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN) in Natal, organized by the ‘Direita UFRN’ movement, resulted in physical confrontations between right-wing militants and students on October 19. The demonstration, which used sound trucks and an inflatable figure of President Lula to criticize the federal government, occurred without institutional authorization and led to property damage and injuries.

Following the clashes, reports identified a specific victim, 28-year-old student Henrique Neiva, who sustained bruises and a fractured tooth. The protest was reportedly coordinated via a WhatsApp group titled ‘UFRN Anti Lula,’ which is allegedly administered by a cabinet secretary for Federal Deputy General Girão. While General Girão and other political actors traded accusations regarding the escalation, the university administration announced it would pursue administrative and judicial measures to investigate the violence and the interruption of academic activities. The case has been officially registered with the Civil Police.
