Uganda electricity supply and maintenance issues

Overview

The Uganda Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) announced a series of scheduled maintenance exercises and network upgrades across various regions of Uganda for November 2026. These activities include routine maintenance on the Light Vending System, which prevents prepaid customers from purchasing tokens, and servicing electrical switching equipment at the Old Queens Way substation. Affected areas include major trading centers in Kampala, the Entebbe corridor, northern Uganda, and western Uganda.

In other regions, residents in the Luuka and Iganga districts celebrated the restoration of electricity following a ten month period of darkness that began in March 2026. These outages were attributed to transformer failures caused by illegal connections and grid overloading. While UEDCL and the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) have begun installing new transformers to stabilize supply, the National Entrepreneurs and Traders Association (NETA) Uganda is demanding the resignation of UEDCL acting managing director Eng Joselynne Rwabwogo. NETA president Dr Thadeus Musoke Nagenda stated that persistent blackouts and fluctuations have caused business losses and equipment damage, calling for a government investigation and an independent audit of UEDCL operations.
