Uganda measles-rubella vaccination campaign

Overview

Uganda completed a five-day nationwide mass immunization campaign from October 1 to October 5, 2026, vaccinating 8,285,835 children against measles and rubella. The initiative, led by the Ministry of Health with support from the World Health Organization, UNICEF, and the Uganda Red Cross Society, targeted children aged nine to 59 months.

The campaign aimed to address immunity gaps resulting from missed routine services during and after the Covid-19 pandemic. Health authorities emphasized the necessity of the drive following 66 separate measles outbreaks recorded in the country in 2025. The effort sought to reach the 95 per cent coverage threshold required to prevent sustained transmission, noting that approximately three million children had missed their second dose during the pandemic.
