Uganda police road safety enforcement

Overview

The Uganda Police Force has initiated a 100-day operation within the Kampala metropolitan area to remove public service vehicles in dangerous mechanical condition (DMC) from the roads. This enforcement action follows a directive from the Minister of State for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama, to improve road safety.

Traffic Police spokesperson Michael Kananura noted that mechanical defects such as issues with brakes, steering, and tyres were major contributors to the 1,183 road crash fatalities recorded in 2025. The crackdown specifically targets dilapidated 14-seater taxis, known as ‘gganyegenya’, on routes including Jinja Road, Gayaza Road, and the Northern Bypass.

In the initial phase of the operation, police apprehended 398 drivers for offences including careless driving, illegal modifications, and operating unsafe vehicles. While the enforcement has resulted in stranded passengers, authorities stated the objective is to ensure only mechanically sound vehicles carry the public rather than disrupting the economy.
