Ugandan entrepreneurship and agricultural credit initiatives
Overview
Uganda is implementing several financial initiatives aimed at supporting green entrepreneurship, agricultural commercialization, and female-led business growth.
In partnership with the Embassy of France, Stanbic Uganda launched the GreenTech Accelerator and Incubation Programme, a UGX 3 billion initiative designed to scale climate-smart businesses in sectors like renewable energy and sustainable agriculture. Minister of State for Gender and Culture, Mary Kuteesa Kamuli, highlighted the importance of removing barriers for women and youth to achieve national economic goals. Stanbic Uganda has pledged to mobilize up to one trillion Uganda shillings by 2028 to support sustainable livelihoods.
Broadening these efforts, the Bank of Uganda is utilizing the Agricultural Credit Facility to distribute affordable credit, having provided approximately Shs1.35 trillion to over 11,000 beneficiaries. Additionally, a US$217 million World Bank-financed project, the Generating Growth Opportunities and Productivity for Women Enterprises (GROW) Project, is providing loans to help women expand businesses. Financial institutions are also increasingly adopting digital transaction data to better assess the creditworthiness of agricultural enterprises.
