Ujjain infrastructure development and religious site impacts

Infrastructure development in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, intended to prepare for the Simhastha 2028 festival, has encountered both community cooperation and legal developments. To facilitate road-widening projects, members of the Bohra community have begun the voluntary removal of a section of the Husami Mosque following consensus and instructions from Syedna Saheb.

In a significant legal development, the Madhya Pradesh High Court upheld the Ujjain Municipal Corporation’s decision to demolish parts of the century-old Shahi Mosque. The court ruled that ensuring transportation and security for pilgrims is a matter of public interest, noting that the corporation had not acted discriminatorily as ten other temples had also been removed along the route.

Concurrently, authorities continue to face challenges attempting to relocate the historic Khade Hanuman idol. Despite the use of heavy machinery such as cranes and JCBs, the eight-foot statue remains immovable. This has led to a surge of devotees who interpret the situation as a divine sign.

To address the issue, experts from IIT Indore have been engaged to conduct technical inspections using modern scanning equipment. Archaeologists suggest the statue may be approximately 1,000 years old, potentially dating back to the Paramara period. Investigations are focused on determining if the idol is anchored to a larger underground structure or an interlocking mechanism to ensure its safety during the expansion efforts.
