UK airline and airport fee regulatory reforms
Overview
The UK government has expanded its regulatory focus through the Civil Aviation (Consumer Protection and Regulatory Reform) Bill, targeting various incremental costs for air travelers. Building on previous measures to ban extra fees for parents sitting with children under 14 and to eliminate administrative charges for minor name corrections, the Department for Transport is now initiating a 12-month review of passenger drop-off fees at 20 UK airports.
These airport charges, which can reach £13 at London City Airport, generate an estimated £300 million annually. The review will investigate affordability, passenger behavior, and how the revenue is utilized. The Business Travel Association has noted that all top 20 UK airports charge these fees, whereas none of the top ten EU airports do. In response, airport operators argue that these funds are necessary to support terminal services and flight variety.
Regarding airline seating, the government aims to implement the ban on family seating charges—which can currently cost up to £104 on return journeys—before the next summer holiday season. These reforms continue the government’s effort to alleviate cost-of-living pressures and align UK policies with European Union standards.
