UK airport traffic and infrastructure growth

In July 2026 Newcastle International Airport announced that it expects to handle more than 1.4 million passengers during the school‑holiday period, a near‑10 % rise on the previous summer. The surge is driven by new routes from carriers such as easyJet, Jet2 and Ryanair, and supported by a £60 million upgrade that added a terminal extension, larger security areas and an expanded baggage hall.

East Midlands Airport, the country’s leading pure‑freight hub, reported handling over 400,000 tonnes of cargo in 2025, contributing roughly £6.2 billion to the economy and prompting plans to lift annual volumes to 580,000 tonnes. Meanwhile, London Luton Airport secured approval for a £2.4 billion expansion that will add a new terminal and upgrade existing facilities, aiming to accommodate up to 32 million passengers by 2043 and create thousands of jobs.
