UK artificial intelligence infrastructure development

Overview

In mid-August 2026, significant developments emerged regarding artificial intelligence infrastructure in the United Kingdom.

Initially, the renewable energy organization Xlink proposed a £13-billion industrial project covering 850 acres. The plan aims to house high-performance processors, such as GPUs and TPUs, to address global AI workload demands. However, the scale of the development has prompted concerns from local residents regarding the conversion of undisturbed natural land into industrial space.

In Scotland, the Lanarkshire AI Growth Zone has seen major expansion through DataVita, which secured a £300 million debt facility to grow its presence in North Lanarkshire. This financing is supported by a £202 million guarantee from the UK’s National Wealth Fund, covering 80% of a £252.5 million lending tranche provided by a syndicate including ING, ABN AMRO, and Santander. Additional funding is being provided by the Scottish National Investment Bank and Siemens Financial Services.

The investment will fund the expansion of the existing DV1 facility and the construction of a new DV3 data center, both of which are leased to AI cloud provider CoreWeave under 15-year agreements. This expansion is expected to create approximately 600 construction jobs and 100 permanent high-skilled roles, contributing to a wider project estimated to support over 3,400 jobs and £8.2 billion in private investment. Additionally, Dell Technologies will establish a Scottish administrative base at Mercury House within the AI Innovation Park.

As infrastructure grows, local concerns have surfaced regarding the impact on rural landscapes and potential strain on energy and water supplies. Consequently, the Scottish Government has implemented new rules requiring ministers to be notified of data center applications exceeding 50MW.
