Researchers from the University of Glasgow and the First Steps Nutrition Trust conducted an analysis of 298 commercial baby food products across six major UK supermarkets. The study, published in the journal Archives of Disease in Childhood, found that many products sold in spouted pouches are nutritionally deficient compared to breast milk, often containing higher sugar concentrations and lower protein and energy levels.
The findings indicate that 70% of these pouches are marketed toward infants under six months old, despite weaning guidelines suggesting a start around six months. Researchers noted that half of the spouted pouches tested had a liquid consistency, which may hinder the development of physical eating skills like chewing. Only approximately 8% of the tested products met the researchers’ full criteria for suitable complementary food.
Experts have expressed concern that the use of fruit concentrates or added sweeteners may habituate infants to high-sugar profiles, potentially increasing risks of childhood obesity, dental caries, and metabolic issues. Consequently, there are calls for regulators to review product classifications and labeling to ensure these items are appropriately categorized.
