Experts, including head of science Richard Fox, noted that while the warm weather benefited adult butterflies, extreme drought conditions may have devastated caterpillar populations by causing essential host plants to wither prematurely. There are concerns that the full impact of these environmental stresses may not be apparent until 2027.
