The 2026 Big Butterfly Count in the United Kingdom reported record-breaking sightings of butterflies and day-flying moths, driven by a hot and dry summer. Volunteers recorded nearly 1.4 million insects, with the migratory Painted Lady species seeing a 335 percent increase compared to the previous year. Other species, such as the holly blue and gatekeeper, also achieved high counts. Regional data highlights a significant surge in the North of England, where more than 160,000 specimens were recorded by over 11,000 participants. Yorkshire reported the highest volume with 118,330 sightings, followed by Lancashire with 27,765. In this region, the Painted Lady was the standout species with 13,876 sightings, contributing to what has been described as a ‘Painted Lady summer’. Despite these high numbers, Butterfly Conservation has warned of a potential population crash in the coming years. Experts, including head of science Richard Fox, noted that while the warm weather benefited adult butterflies, extreme drought conditions may have devastated caterpillar populations by causing essential host plants to wither prematurely. There are concerns that the full impact of these environmental stresses may not be apparent until 2027.
