UK engineering sector faces widening skills and diversitygap

The UK engineering sector is facing a deepening crisis characterized by a massive talent deficit and significant demographic imbalances. While industry leaders at the Advanced Engineering exhibition argued that British innovation remains strong, trade bodies Enginuity and the Construction Equipment Association have partnered to provide workforce data to address an estimated £5.2 billion annual loss caused by skills shortages.

At the Farnborough airshow, the aerospace and defence segments highlighted a specific shortfall of approximately 10,000 specialised engineers annually. The workforce is aging, with over half of licensed engineers aged over 50 and fewer than 10% under 30. This gap is exacerbated by the siphoning of talent by AI and emerging technologies, as well as the reduction of traditional apprenticeship programmes in favor of graduate schemes. Despite a 31% growth in the sector over the last decade, the talent pipeline has failed to keep pace with record order backlogs.

New research indicates the scale of the challenge may require 240,000 new engineers and technicians every year. Furthermore, the sector struggles with diversity; women make up only 17% of the engineering workforce, and 15% are from ethnic minority backgrounds. Studies from the University of Portsmouth suggest that historical discrimination and exclusionary workplace cultures, particularly in environments like the Royal Dockyards, have created structural barriers for women. Experts argue that addressing these diversity gaps and increasing investment in vocational qualifications are essential to supporting economic growth and government initiatives like the New Deal for Young People.
