The UK government has announced a £90 million investment in heat networks aimed at providing cleaner, more affordable heating to over 750,000 homes. A significant portion of this funding, £41 million, is dedicated to the London Strategic Heat Main, which intends to use excess heat from data centers and factories to serve approximately 650,000 homes in the capital. This project involves transporting hot water via electric barges on the River Thames and eventually through a dedicated tunnel.

Other allocations include developments in Bexley, Greenwich, Marble Arch, and Bradford, alongside £13.3 million distributed through the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme to improve existing infrastructure in England and Wales.

Under the Heat Network Efficiency Scheme, specific local projects are also receiving support. In Salford, Salix Homes secured £2.2 million to modernize communal heating systems, insulation, and meters in five tower blocks, benefiting more than 500 residents. This follows a previous £1.2 million award for upgrades in Pendleton, bringing the total secured by Salix Homes to approximately £3.5 million for eight of its ten tower blocks.
