UK judicial system digital reforms
Overview
The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Justice and HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) have initiated digital reforms to modernize the judicial system and address case backlogs.
A pilot scheme has been launched to allow judges to hear cases remotely, enabling judicial resources to be deployed across different geographical regions. This initiative connects judges, defendants, lawyers, and witnesses through digital technology to reduce delays and physical attendance requirements.
In conjunction with these remote hearings, the Digital Audio-Visual Evolution (DAVE) programme is upgrading courtroom infrastructure. The programme aims to replace outdated equipment with modern screens, microphones, and cameras to support digital evidence and remote participation. Approximately 385 courtrooms have been updated so far, with a long-term objective to refresh 2,850 courtrooms.
