The United Kingdom labour market has exhibited signs of cooling and mixed performance. In mid-August, job vacancies reached a five-year low of 707,000, while private sector pay growth slowed to 2.8%. During this period, the CIPD described the environment as a “low-hire, low-fire” market, noting that employer confidence was near record lows outside of the pandemic. Furthermore, the services sector has faced 23 consecutive months of job cuts due as of August, according to S&P Global’s Purchasing Managers Index (PMI). While the sector continues to expand, rising operational costs costs—including fuel, transportation, and declining wages—have led firms to trim headcounts or freeze hiring. Additionally, export sales, despite overall sector expansion. sales for UK services declined for a sixth consecutive month, reflecting weak international demand.
