UK local council rejections of development proposals

In late July 2026, two English local authorities each turned down proposals that would alter community use of existing buildings. On 25 July, Bodmin Town Council formally objected to a plan to add two extra floors and convert a town‑centre building into nine flats, citing inadequate parking, amenity space and drainage. The objection will be taken up by Cornwall Council in its final decision.

Three days later, on 28 July, North Yorkshire Council refused a parish application to list the closed Coore Arms pub in Scruton as an Asset of Community Value, saying evidence of broader community use was insufficient.

Later that week, a 26‑storey tower proposal next to Manchester’s Grade II‑listed Britons Protection pub was withdrawn, preserving the historic building. In Birmingham, planners are reviewing a conversion of 72 High Street into a four‑bedroom HMO, with a decision expected in early August. Manchester City Council is assessing a 154‑home affordable‑housing scheme aimed at meeting its 10,000‑home target by 2032. Coventry’s new high‑rise apartments have sparked debate over balcony size, while Leeds City Council granted an alcohol licence despite resident objections. Nottingham’s Footasylum store is set to be replaced by a Chick‑fil‑A applicant, and Crewe’s planning committee recommended approval for converting two commercial buildings into 108 town‑centre apartments, though parking concerns were raised.
