UK media inquiry calls following death of Dr. Jason Ardey

Following the death of Dr. Jason Ardey, the former youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge, public calls for a formal inquiry into media conduct have intensified. Dr. Ardey was found dead at his home in Battersea, South London, after resigning from his academic positions amid scrutiny regarding plagiarism allegations and his personal background.

The Good Law Project organized a petition, signed by over 31,000 people including several Members of Parliament, requesting that Prime Minister Andy Burnham launch a public inquiry. The organization asserts that his death was an “immediate, foreseeable and expected consequence of the media campaign of harassment” and suggests his race played a role in the treatment he received.

In response, Green Party leader Zack Polanski has also called for an inquiry, criticizing the Independent Press Standards Organisation (Ipso) as “toothless”. Polanski and Green Party members have proposed measures such as banning foreign ownership of national newspapers and reopening the Leveson inquiry to establish a more effective, independent regulator capable of addressing racism, ableism, and harassment in news reporting.

Labour MP Dawn Butler has joined calls for decisive action from Ipso, alleging that relentless coverage by major outlets contributed to Ardey’s death. Journalist Will Self has further advocated for increased scrutiny, suggesting that the police and the Crown Prosecution Service should investigate the matter. Conversely, critics argue that increased oversight could threaten press freedoms, noting that existing legal actions by firms like Carter-Ruck have historically been used to suppress investigative reporting.
