Following the death of Dr. Jason Ardey, the former youngest Black professor at the University of Cambridge, public calls for a formal inquiry into media conduct have intensified. Polanski and Green Party members have proposed measures such as banning foreign ownership of national newspapers and reopening the Leveson inquiry to establish a more effective, independent regulator capable of addressing racism, ableism, and harassment in news reporting. Labour MP Dawn Butler has joined calls for decisive action from Ipso, alleging that relentless coverage by major outlets contributed to Ardey’s death. Journalist Will Self has further advocated for increased scrutiny, suggesting that the police and the Crown Prosecution Service should investigate the matter. Conversely, critics argue that increased oversight could threaten press freedoms, noting that existing legal actions by firms like Carter-Ruck have historically been used to suppress investigative reporting.
