UK-Nigeria diplomatic and digital cooperation
Overview
The United Kingdom is strengthening diplomatic and developmental ties with Nigeria through high-level engagements and regional visits.
Following the arrival of British High Commissioner-designate Pete Vowles in Abuja to succeed Richard Montgomery, British Deputy High Commissioner Jonny Baxter conducted an official visit to Abia State. This visit focused on sectors such as power, trade, transportation, education, and digital transformation.
A primary component of this cooperation is the State-Level Policy, Regulatory and Institutional Reforms Enabling Digital Transformation (SPRIRET) initiative, funded by the UK FCDO. The UK is supporting Abia State in establishing regulatory frameworks for digital growth and has assisted approximately 450 civil servants in upgrading their digital skills.
Infrastructure efforts include the development of community-owned connectivity hubs to expand affordable digital access, with operational hubs established in Okporoenyi Community and ongoing development in Arochukwu. These initiatives aim to stimulate investment from British companies and foster sustainable economic growth through improved digital literacy and infrastructure.
