UK sugar rationing and dementia risk study
Overview
Researchers conducting an analysis of UK Biobank data have identified a link between reduced early-life sugar consumption and a lower risk of neurological diseases later in life. Using the post-World War II sugar rationing period in the United Kingdom as a natural experiment, the study examined approximately 60,000 participants born between 1951 and 1956.
The findings, published in the journal npj Aging, indicate that individuals exposed to lower sugar intake during their first one to two years of life experienced significant reductions in dementia risk. Specifically, the data suggests a 46 percent lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and a 27 percent lower overall risk of dementia. Additionally, the low-sugar group showed an average dementia onset delay of 2.6 years, with MRI scans revealing greater grey-matter volume and fewer white-matter hyperintensities.
While the study highlights a correlation between historical sugar rationing and improved neurological health, the authors note that the research is observational and cannot definitively prove a causal relationship.
