UK supermarket retail trends and operations
Overview
During the August bank holiday, major UK supermarkets implemented reduced operating hours. Large Tesco stores in England and Wales were scheduled to open from 8am to 6pm, while Sainsbury’s and Asda planned to remain open until 10pm. Other retailers, including Waitrose, M&S, Lidl, and Morrisons, also reported early closures or modified schedules.
By early September, UK supermarket sales growth began to decelerate. Total till sales grew by 1.8% in the four weeks ending September 5, down from a 3.2% average in the previous 12 weeks. This slowdown coincided with the end of summer holidays and a shift in consumer demand from summer refreshments to comfort foods, such as soup and gravy, alongside a 9.4% increase in ‘all natural’ products.
Retail performance varied by brand. The four largest chains—Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda, and Morrisons—saw a combined growth of 1.1%. In contrast, Marks & Spencer’s food business grew by 13.8%, and German discounters Aldi and Lidl saw a combined growth of 3.3%, driven largely by a 7.2% surge at Lidl.
