Following a period of seasonal decline in late August, authorities are responding to new tactics by smugglers using larger vessels. In early September, France deployed a specialized 45-person “surge” team to beaches west of Calais to disrupt smuggling supply chains. This deployment follows record-breaking incidents involving mega-inflatable boats, including a 15-meter vessel that carried 260 migrants. Smugglers are increasingly utilizing longer routes from the Normandy coast to evade policing. On 22 September, approximately 50 to 60 migrants arrived in Dover after a crossing lasting more than 33 hours. Uncertainty regarding the landing site led to hundreds of anti-migrant protesters gathering near the Gosport marina, resulting in six arrests. Recent activity indicates a significant surge in crossings. British authorities reported 781 arrivals via small boats in a single day, surpassing the previous record of 752. While total crossings for 2026 have reached approximately 18,600—a 42% decrease compared to the same period in 2025—authorities note migrants are “changing their tactics” in response to enforcement. This includes the use of “water taxis” to collect migrants in locations far from police surveillance. Controversy has emerged regarding the role of French organizations. Reports and footage near Boulogne-sur-Mer allegedly show volunteers from the association Opal’Exil assisting children onto boats, with claims that volunteers removed high-visibility tabards when being filmed. Additionally, reports in Normandy suggest maritime volunteers and lifeguards provided assistance, such as handing out lifejackets, to a vessel carrying approximately 60 people. The route remains lethal.
