Ukraine entry ban for Polish journalist Łukasz Warzecha
Overview
The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) issued a three-year entry ban to Polish journalist and commentator Łukasz Warzecha following a seven-hour detention at the Dołhobyczów–Uhrynów border crossing. Warzecha was traveling as part of an organized study visit coordinated by the Mieroszewski Centre and the Ukrainian Institute, a state institution under the Ukrainian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Despite the group's participation being previously coordinated and approved by Ukrainian authorities, Warzecha was denied entry due to cited security concerns. Polish diplomats from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the embassy in Kyiv intervened in an attempt to secure his entry but were unsuccessful.
The incident has prompted political reactions in Poland. Krzysztof Bosak, Vice-Marshal of the Sejm, described the treatment of the journalist as scandalous and requested urgent intervention from Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the matter is ongoing and that they continue to act on behalf of the Polish citizen.
