Ukraine EU accession and Polish public opinion shift
Overview
In late July 2026, internal turmoil within Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party pushed the government toward a harder-right stance, coinciding with a sharp drop in Polish support for Ukraine’s EU membership – from 90% in 2022 to about 50% in a new poll. The decline was linked to historical grievances over World War II events and recent diplomatic friction after President Zelenskyy was honored by a unit named for the Ukrainian Insurgent Army.
A week later, a broader European poll showed that overall EU public opinion on Ukraine’s accession was split, with 49% in favour and 39% opposed. Support remained strongest in Spain and Italy, while opposition was highest in Poland (49% rejecting full membership) and was rising in France and Germany. The Polish stance was tied to the same diplomatic row over the White Eagle Order, indicating that the domestic political shift in Poland was influencing wider EU sentiment toward Ukraine’s EU bid.
By August 2026, new data from Statistics Poland (GUS) indicated growing domestic anxieties. Approximately 28.2% of Polish respondents identified the situation in Ukraine as a major threat to Poland’s sovereignty and independence, up from 22.8% in July. Economic concerns also rose, with 22.7% of respondents viewing the situation as a major threat to the Polish economy and 42.6% seeing it as a moderate threat.
